Prof. Dr. Francis Schwarze im Labor

MycoSolutions AG was founded in 2016 by Prof. Dr. Francis Schwarze. He is head of the bio-engineered wood division for applied wood research at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research). In addition to his expertise, Prof. Dr. Schwarze also brings practical experience to his scientific advice for MycoSolutions as a trained arborist. His expertise supports the development of Avengelus plant strengthening products. Furthermore, he is currently researching fungi biotech-solutions for wood refinement in the sound wood and design sector as well as the production of melanin based on fungis. These products are to reach market maturity in the next few years with the help of MycoSolutions AG.

Career Prof. Dr. Francis Schwarze

  • 1992 MSc in “Pure and Applied Plant and Fungal Taxonomy” Reading University, UK,
  • 1995 PhD at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg; Germany,
  • Since 1993 by the Regierungspräsidium Freiburg officially appointed and attested expert on Arboriculture and wood decay of urban trees,
  • 1996-2003 Assistant Professor at the Institut für Forstbotanik und Baumphysiologie, Professur für Forstbotanik, with a research focus on wood decay fungi and host-fungus interactions,
  • 2001 Habilitation and founder of the Institute for Angewandte Baumpathologie GmbH, Freiburg, Germany,
  • Since 2003 Head of the research group Bio-engineered Wood, Applied Wood Material Laboratory, Empa,
  • 2006 elected as adjunct Professor by the Senate of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
  • 2006 Awarded with the Scholarship Neue Horizonte-Ideenpool Holz 21, Verbesserte akustische Eigenschaften von Klangholz
