Fortyone invests in biotech start-up MycoSolutions

MycoSolutions AG, a spin-off of Empa in St. Gallen, will receive a new major shareholder through a second round of financing. The funds for the international expansion come from Fortyone AG, a group of successful Eastern Swiss entrepreneurs.

MycoSolutions is currently growing in new business areas such as tree care, groundcare treatment, gardening and landscaping as well as processed wood with high-quality products made from Trichoderma microorganisms. In addition to Swisscom Ventures, the company has now also been able to convince the new investor Fortyone of its innovative and growth potential.

“With its substantial commitment to the Swiss biotech start-up, the company aims above all to strengthen its market development in the field of biological plant treatment at an international level. We believe in the young company and the successful, Europe-wide scaling in the coming years. At the same time, it is an investment in environmental protection for us,” says Fortyone Managing Director Marcel Walker, explaining the sustainable investment decision.

Founder of the start-up Prof. Dr. Francis Schwarze, head of the “Bio-engineered Wood” division of Empa St. Gallen’s “Applied Wood Materials” Department, is pleased with the new boost of growth: “With investors who believe in our idea and strive for long-term support, we can continue to research interesting, environmentally friendly products as a non-listed company.”

These promising biotech products based on fungi from nature, which are currently being developed, also include marble wood, Mycowood tonewood for instrument manufacture and melanin production for organic semiconductors or biological sunscreen.

About MycoSolutions

MycoSolutions is a spin-off of Empa, outgrown the Empa division “Applied Wood Materials” and the group “Bio-engineered Wood”, founded in July 2016 as an unlisted AG. The scientific know-how is based on 25 years of research by founder Prof. Dr. Francis Schwarze. His competence and creativity determine the innovative strength of MycoSolutions AG.

The company develops and sells innovative, sustainable and biological fungal cultures to strengthen the resistance and prolong the life of trees, shrubs and bushes as well as ornamental and useful plants and processed wood. MycoSolutions received the Empa Innovation Award 2018 for this type of innovation.

Promising future products in research include the upgrading of inexpensive native wood, such as beech, by treating fungi, in the form of marble wood, tonewood for instrument manufacture at the Stradivarius violin level and the extraction of melanin from fungi for the electrical and sun protection industries.
